いつも明るくやさしくて、でもちょっとおっちょこちょいな老婦人ミセス・ペッパーポットは、体が名前のとおり突然ペッパーポット（コショウ入れ）くらいに縮んでしまうという特異体質を持っています。動物が大好きな彼女は、小さくなると動物の言葉がわかるのを幸いに、近所や森中の動物たちと大冒険を繰り返します。池で蛙に泳ぎを習ったり、カラスの集会に引っ張り出されてしまったり、猫の背に乗って子猫を助けに行ったり、遠出をした先で次々に動物を拾ってしまったり。そんな彼女の秘密がまわりの人にばれるのではないかと、夫のミスター・ペッパーポットはいつもハラハラ！ノルウェイの谷間の小さな町を舞台に、「スプーンおばさん」の四季を描いたオムニバス短編集。

昔TVアニメでよく見た「スプーンおばさん」の原作本。アルフ・プリョイセンはノルウェイの人で、原語もノルウェイ語らしいのでこれは英訳本になる。この本では日本でお馴染みの「スプーンおばさん」という呼称は何処にも出てこなくて、一貫してPepperpotになっている。未確認だが、原書でも「スプーン」になっているらしい。41の短編が収録されていて、10ページ以下の短い話から、比較的長い話まで色々ある（日本語訳ではもっと細かく分かれて収録されているらしい）。

スプーン「おばさん」だから何となく中年女性のイメージがあったのだけど、この本のミセス・ペッパーポットは「老婦人」だった。子供たちもとっくに家を出て老夫婦が2人で楽しく暮らしているという設定で、おばさんというよりおばあちゃん、魔女のような人だった。頭が回って何でも知っているような所、動物や子供たちをいつの間にか思い通りに動かしてしまう所、など。
お話は本当に色々あった。個人的に気に入ったのは、人形劇で眠り姫に扮することになるMrs Pepperpot and the Puppet Show（32話）と、蛙に泳ぎを習うMrs Pepperpot Learns to Swim（34話）かな。
